Debating on the format here…..

Debating on the format here…..

I am currently doing some research on which is the best platform to host this blog. I like the idea of being able to receive comments from my readers but at the same time I am growing tired of the SPAM! If anyone has advice I would welcome it. I want this to be a productive way to communicate our experiences with family, friends, and those who just have an interest in this adventure. I also would like this to serve as a keepsake for me and my family from our adventure. I know that we will not be on the road forever and I want to be able to return to this blog to relive the amazing times that I am sure we are going to have. Like I said above any advice is greatly appreciated.

Also, we are now using Instagram under the user name @8feet12paws so check that out!

Another note I taught Ashley how to log into this and make posts, can you believe that this has been online for over a month and she just now started to read it…. Told you no one was reading it, lol.

Good discussion

Good discussion

I had a good discussion with my Mom tonight it is nice to hear that she is very supportive of this choice. As crazy as our idea is, it’s nice to know that we have people in our corner that are cheering for our success. From day one my Mom, Dad and Step-mom have been backing this as they know that we are trying to make our lives fuller and find time with our girls. I am feeling at peace right now with our choices, but I am sure that doubts will creep in, but I know that I have the support of a wonderful family to guide us through.

Did some test fitting for the solar panels today.

Did some test fitting for the solar panels today.

It was 30 degrees here today and I thought what better way to spend my morning than to climb on top of the snow covered RV roof and measure solar panels. The ladder was so cold my hands ached by the time I reached the top. I was able to determine roughly how much space I would have to place the panels. It looks like I can get 5 190watt Topoint panels up there.

OH! other big news! I was able to get the last scrap of carpet up from under the slide where the dinette is located. Man what a bear that was to get too, we had to make a tool from a piece of aluminum to bang the staples out.  It a huge pain! But at last the floor is bare, well except that it is covered in dirt, dust, and carpet fibers :). The next project is getting up the kitchen flooring that appeared to be glued down vinyl planks. After that, we hope to start painting! The weather is not helping, we can’t paint with the temperatures being so low, and since the motor home is in storage it is not feasible to run the heater the whole time. So paint is on the back burner until the temps warm up a touch.

It does appear that at least one person is ready this, thanks for the comment and letting me know that I was not in a room just talking to myself.

Till later,

Slow week, but a big goal was tackled.

Slow week, but a big goal was tackled.

Well it was a slow week for working on the RV, we really didn’t get much completed. I did get the lights from M4leds.com and they are really nice. The only issue is that one of the fixtures has plenty of room to get the wiring inside but three of the others are really tight, I may have to purchase new fixtures….grrr.

On another note I finally had one of the most difficult discussions about this change in our lives. I had to break it to my grandparents. We are exceptionally close to them, as are our girls. It was hard telling them that we would no longer live just up the highway from them. I worry that I will not get to spend time with them like we used too. I still have a lot to learn from my grandfather and it saddens me that I will be away from them. But they are pretty tech savvy and said that we can skype with the girls to keep them in the loop. It was weird I felt like my grandmother acted like we were living this week not in five months. I hope we didn’t disappoint them, but I know that they will be proud of us no matter what we do. I am sure they will get used to the idea. They know why we are making this change and they support it, but I think the concept of leaving a “good” job and becoming a nomad is a little foreign to them. But I think deep down inside my grandfather know that it is what we need as a family, what I need as a man. Well so long for know, we will have more stuff done next week, I promise. BTW Ashley still has yet to sell anything on Craigslist, hint hint…. Maybe she will read this and get motivated!

LED lights are Super awesome!

LED lights are Super awesome!

I finished installing the LED bulbs in the fixtures today that replaced all of the incandescent bulbs. I can say the light seems to be a little brighter and cleaner. The biggest advantage is the power savings! It is estimated that the LED replacements will use 12.5% of the power that that the standard bulbs used! I started work on replacing the T5 Compact Florescent bulbs with strip LEDs but I was not pleased with the light output. So I ordered 10 LED light tubes from M4LED.com and should have them next week. This is a short update, I just wanted to check in.

Getting our Demo on!

Getting our Demo on!

Well we finally started the renovations to the interior of the coach. The to list is long and for now includes: New flooring (Vinyl Plank), Paint the cabinets, rip out the dinette and replace with a bunk system for the girls, remove recliner, remove valances, retro in LED lighting, install composting toilet, build a expandable table where the recliner used to be, and fix the small leak that I found in the front drivers area. Man the list seems so much longer when I type it all out!!! As you can see from the photo it is a mess, but it is already looking better. That sofa is also getting replaced so that will be a nice new leather one, we hope that it will hold up to the kids and dogs a little better.  The more that I tear into this the more I am thinking that I should be documenting the experience with video. I am not sure that we are ready to make our Youtube debut yet but at least we will have the footage for later… Who knows. But for now it is back to work and we will keep you all updated ( Yes I am aware that no one reads this…… YET!)
